Easter

Spring has sprung. The cold temperatures have given way to warm, sunny days with hot afternoons warning of hot days to come. For weeks flowering trees have been in bloom and colorful pansies have decorated street intersection islands. This year Easter is April 4th and the White House Easter Egg Roll will be April 5th.

Wooden White House Souvenir Eggs

When we were growing up, it was always great fun for me along with my brothers and sisters to color hard boiled eggs at Easter. We used teaspoons to dip the eggs into tea cups of vegetable dye and used crayons to scribble on them, then re-dipping the egg until we had created an egg with unique colors and designs.

The most famous of all decorated eggs are the Russian Faberge eggs. In 1885 the Russian Czar, Alexander III, commissioned a young jeweler, Peter Carl Faberge to make a special Easter present for the Czarina. He used real gold, silver and precious gems to create the first of many annual Easter eggs.

One year when I lived in Orange, a friend brought me a beautiful glass basket full of glass and ceramic eggs. It was a totally unexpected gift and I have treasured it since.

When Mom and Dad were in their late 90s, I enjoyed taking them each a miniature Easter basket with tissue grass, jelly beans and chocolate bunnies.
