[Editor's Note]

During these 3 years of COVID19 and Global Difficulties, it is sometimes hard to remember that Good Things Still Happen.

We would like share some of our Good Things, spread along the 12 Nights of Christmas, that take us from Dec 25th: The First Night of Christmas to Jan 5th: The Twelfth Night.

We hope our joys, both the profound and the mundane, bring kindess and happiness to your lives.

Wishing all a happy, fun and safe holiday season.

I am thankful for my friend A. We have been friends with for a long time. She has been in similar emotional circumstances and provides wonderous and direct insights. She is compassionate and caring. Her outlook and experience shine as a beacon for me. She knows the drill and can open the door for me to see what's possible and what's important. They are not the same. She provides her knowledge freely to help me navigate the rougher parts of the future: helping me Find A Path that works for me.

3 Hearts by KimB

I have 3 hearts

the first is the one beating / it has been beating for 1 year longer than my life

the second is my heart of sorrows / it holds all the sadness of my life

the third is my heart of hope / it holds love and happiness and kindness / it pours this into my life like blood / it keeps beating for a future

sometimes I think my heart will stop but it keeps going / it is pulled by the other two

someday it will stop / but only when all three have stopped together

Deja Vu - all over again .. by Anno Nymus

 "... just when I thought I was out ..

they pulled me back in again .. ! "

OR ...

"out of the frying pan .. and into the fire ... ?"

1 - Helms Twin Coach number 146

- has a new home - been sold!

2 - Helms Twin Coach number 38

- is on its way here - just bought!

3 - Greyhound Scenicruiser number 150

- is already here !!

Wow !!!

146 -as found 2019

146 - getting there ..

146 - my blue stripe is back !!

the final goal .. time travel to 1957 ;)
this one - not mine - but a magnificent restoration - just sold for a quarter million ..

1 - Helms Twin Coach number 146

- has a new home - been sold!

Helms number 146 just found a California buyer who will finish it nicely and bring it to fruition and it will live is So-Cal again!

But .... Here is where serendipity runs smack dab into chance !!

The funds from that sale purchased a wonderful 1954 GM Greyhound Scenicruiser Bus ... but wait ... as fate would have it .. the day the bus pulled out from Michigan en route to Texas ..

I bid on - and astoundingly won .. due to a retracted bid -  an online auction in Virginia ... for another 1931 ca Helms Bakery truck !!!! .. complete with original woodwork ... and those amazing original drawers! Helms number 38 !! ... they only made 150 !!  OMG!!!!

So old number 38 is being trailer-ed to Texas as we speak .. but what amazing back to back finds!!  I wonder, what ARE the odds of finding 2 unicorns??  -- much less several ? Wow!

2 - Helms Twin Coach number 38

- is on its way here - just bought!

3 - Greyhound Scenicruiser number 150

- is already here !!

1954 GM PD 4501-150 - The Music Bus
former Greyhound  Express Scenicruiser

Chad G - an internet hero of the Greyhound bus nuts especially the PD 4501 Scenicruiser folks ... (and one man historic bus salvation crew) , and his assistant Rupen ... flew out from California, and piloted  the Scenicruiser from Michigan - where it had lived for several decades.

He said she drove like a dream, and could feel that the bus was glad to be running the roads again - these wonderful old machines were made to run .. mine literally has millions of miles on it .. and many more to go .. they seem to have a spirit and soul .. and respond gloriously when they know you care for them and they are in good hands ..

Chad and Rupen both made some wonderful videos of the trip and watching them .. it was almost like 1960 again .. watching rural America roll by .. truly a time machine!

in February of 1960, I spent 9 days traveling in one of these amazing coaches ..   from San Francisco to Philadelphia ..  .. traveled solo -- with a whopping 20 bux for the round trip ! ( a burger - fries and coke in 1960 was 75 cents!) ,, used 10 bux going east .. and had 10 for the return the following year .,, in July .. Philly to SF .. another 9 days .. what an amazing experience for 14-15 year old .. see the USA and leave the driving to us .. rode thousands of miles on these old time machines!

Chad and Rupen are great videographers  and have lots of great videos on the "Scenicruising" Facebook page ...
(and soon on Chad's YouTube channel)   .. all worth viewing!!

The sleek lines on this old dog are wonderful .. she  is a marvelous old gal .. the design was ground breaking .. and changed the laws to allow a 40 foot bus .. until the Scenicruiser .. busses could only be 35 feet - and mostly 2 axle .. the added 5 feet and extra tag/ bogey axle is unique to these - changed interstate laws to allow 40 foot vehicles ... but one rear axle only has 1 tire each side - so these have 8 tires  .. wonderful machines .. the air ride was sooo smooth .. like flying really - this represents a different time of travel for sure!! The bus was a way of life for us in the 50's and 60's !

This wonderful '1950's Music themed Bus' is phase one of my master plan to film a reminiscing drive ...  up the California coast .. from Sandy Eggo to Nor-Cal .. and then down the Central valley  - possibly to  Death Valley .. then on to Arizona  - see Paul Bunyan's big ditch - hopefully swing by Phoenix and see family .. would love to go thru Tucson Saguaro Monument and environs .. and then scat right back to the shack .. :D

The idea is a grand bucket list trip to re-live favorite spots of my youth in California and Arizona  .. whilst I have the time,  and can still dip a toe in the Pacific !!  .. YOLO baby !?! lol

Tentative planning is for the springtime .. before brutal summer heat!

Possibly looking at some other busses as well ... they are remarkably inexpensive .. (the bus was less than my 5 year old hybrid lol ) checking into some that might be more appropriate for long travel - more RV like inside .. but busses and nomadic travel are a wonderful and exciting world that I am having a blast exploring and revisiting .. amazed to find how many folks live full time in bus conversions .. a lot of folks that work from home have found that home can be anywhere !!!  lol

well ...  now I have my ticket .. oh!!  I see my bus has just arrived -- gotta go!!! .. talk to y'all soon!

We Voted! by R Cane

We Voted!!

Me and Mum got our ballots marked and mailed.

As Centenarian, Mrs B has voted in many elections and for many candidates. Her achievement is a milestone along the pathways and history of our country.

She recalled the time when she drove Grandfather Abbott to the Drive Thru Voting site to vote when he was 101.

She figures she has a few more rounds of voting to do to match his record.

We all need to remember that:
Voting Is The American Way!
So,
Get Out There and VOTE!

When what you don't know.... by KimB

I get lots of interesting things at the Food Pantry. Loads of stuff I don't know what to do with or how to cook it. It's a culinary adventure-land!

Every week, it's a Door Number 3 SURPRISE! when you get home and have time to look at what's in the bag for the week. Often times it's a wonderful "WOW! YUM!" and other times is a "WTF do I do with THIS?".

In a recent grocery bag I found a large selection of Yellow Bell Peppers, about 3 lbs of bell peppers. Nice bright yellow ones, not too big, maybe a bit small for Stuffed Peppers but good for everything from salads, to rice, to meat casaroles and a bright note for sandwiches. WOW!

There were quite a lot of them, probably more than 20 in the bag. So I decided I'd make Roasted Bell Peppers, which would have great flavor and I can freeze some of it for later uses.

Sounds a Good Plan!

I decided to cut them up into sections. My personal technique is to look at the bottom of the pepper and were it pinches inwards is where the white membrane is located. So I cut off the section omitting the membrane. I get 3 or 4 wedges of good pepper and less hassle with seeds and the core.

These peppers didn't have much white membrane, actually they had nearly none, although they did have unusal black seeds. Normally black seeds make occasional appearance in bell peppers but all of these had black seeds. They looked like small bright yellow apples in shape. Interesting. Maybe a new type of Bell Pepper?

So I'm merrily slicing bell peppers and get a whole gallon size freezer bag of glorious yellow bells pieces. I drizzled olive oil and lemon pepper and some oregano into the bag, sealed the bag and gave it all a good tumble. WOW!

I toss them onto the hot BBQ grill and Let The Sizzle Begin!

I went about some other tasks while the peppers were grilling, one of which is to eat an English Muffin with my latest fruit sauce: Chunky Plum. Tastes great but... it's a bit spicy...

How can plums with sugar taste spicy?

I sniff my hands and they smell of bell peppers and I notice a tiny burning sensation on my lips..

Hmmm...

Maybe it's something about those unusual bell peppers? Maybe they are some kind of spicier bells? They look like over sized habanero peppers but habaneros have thin skins and these have thick skins.

So I hit the web to find out...

Habaneros... Indeed...

They are called Rocoto Peppers (Capsicum pubescens 1 ) and come from South America. In Mexico they are called "apple peppers". Very popular and very spicy.

How Spicy Are They?

Scoville Heat Units
Tabasco Pepper 50,000
Thai chili pepper
(aka Bird's eye chili)
100,000
Habanero &
Scotch Bonnet
350,000
Rocoto Peppers 50,000 to 250,000

I have a gallon freezer bag of them...

The Recipe Box: Basil Rice Pilaf

Basil Rice Pilaf
From the recipe box of KimB

Going to the Food Pantry is an adventure. It's like Forrest Gump's Box of Chocolates: you never know what's going to be in the bag or on offer. Other than standing in line, sometimes for hours, being with hundreds of other people who cannot make their meager pensions last through the month, can be an enjoyable experience or at least an insightful one.

The folks running the Food Pantry are all very nice. They are as helpful as they can be. Most of these folks are volunteers and they know how hard the cost of living increases is making it for everyone, including themselves.

Since all the food is given by donation, the variety changes with each Pantry Day. While they do their best to give out the "Standard American Diet 3 Food Groups: Sugar, Salt and Fat", there are often things available that require a bit more ingenuity to turn into a tasty meal.

I have to use a lot of "ingenuity" these days.

This particular ingenuity dish is very nice. Has lots of uses and can go with many different menus. It can be altered a lot of ways. If you don't like basil, use cilantro or parsley or whatever is in the weekly bag.

Ingredients: Basil Rice Pilaf

Use a Rice Pilaf Mix (aka Rice a Roni) or Make Your Own.

To Make Your Own Pilaf Mix:
  • 1 Cup of rice of your choice: jasmine, long grain etc.
  • 1/4 Cup of short vermicelli pieces, often sold for soups.

1 tsp of dried onion.
1 tsp of granulated garlic.
1/2 tsp of salt.
2 1/2 Cups of hot water.
2 or 3 Large sprigs of fresh basil, on the stem.
Olive Oil

Preparation:
  1. Use a small amount of Olive Oil in a skillet that has a cover. Saute the rice and vermicelli until the vermicelli gets a bit brown.
  2. Add the dried onion, dried garlic and salt.
  3. Slowly add the 2 1/2 Cups of hot water keeping the liquid at a simmer. Adjust for taste.
  4. Place the large sprigs of basil on top and cover.
  5. Cook for 15 minutes on the burner at a simmer and 5 minutes off the burner.
  6. Once the rice is done, remove the large sprigs of basil. Some of the leaves will remain in the dish.
Serve hot or cold or as a picnic salad with diced tomatoes and a mild vinaigrette.

note: If using canned tomato pieces, drain well. Save the juice for vegetable stock or use it in the vinaigrette.

Lucky's Sock by KimB

We have 3 cats - or rather - I have 3 cats. Since my spouse, Allen, died, I have to remind myself that it's not WE/OUR anymore it's I/MINE. So I have 3 cats: Othello is the oldest, then Lucky and Bette who are the same age. They each has their own story and personality.

While I have to remind myself to use singular pronouns, the cats do not have them. They don't know We from I, but they do know something changed. Something Big. Something is Different. Something is Missing.

There are people who do not think animals feel loss or grief, but lots of us know they too can feel the absence of another, they just express it in different ways. Sometimes they may show only a flitting interest and sometimes they may show a more prolonged difference in mood.

We/I had several budgerigars, aka parakeets, that lived well past 20 years. When one of them died the other climbed down to the bottom of the cage to "see" their cage mate lying there. It did not last long, only a few moments. He looked at the feather lump, cocked his head in different directions, approached slowly and after a short time, climbed back up to the perch.

Cattle and horses also sense death. They perhaps are curious about the stillness of their pasture mate but it is a bit more than that. They approach the inert herd member slowly, ready to shy or spook away but once close enough, they look intently; then go on about their daily routines, ignoring the dead one. They don't come and look again, that is something humans do.

After Allen died, the cats all showed their indications of the loss, each differently.

Bette was the most affected as she was highly attached to Allen. She was at a loss trying to find him in the house. She is still unsettled and I'm at best, a second rate stand in, for her. She is slowly moving her affections in my direction but it isn't at the same level. We have our routine, when I lie down, she comes up on the bed and I rub her tummy. Then we take a nap together.

Othello is less demonstrative. He mopes frequently. He is a bit frustrated with me, as he spent years teaching Allen to respond to his signals for Meal Time. Now, he has to teach me to respond to his requests and I am harder to teach. When I don't fill up the feed bowls just right, so there are no blank spots in the middle, he looks at me with his beautiful golden eyes and you can almost see him thinking: Second String.

Lucky did not seem to be affected as much. He is a happy cat, and very adventurous. He has a extraordinarily long tail which he chases and catches, garnering laughter for his antics. While the hospital bed was here, he was the only cat to jump up on the bed. All the cats walked around and under the bed, as if they knew Allen was there, but only Lucky jumped up on the mattress.

Some time before Allen died, I purchased some nice warm bed socks for him. They were fuzzy and soft, with grippy feet. They could keep his feet warm and he could walk around wearing them. I bought 2 pairs. They were only partially useful as the company sent a smaller size, so the fit was a bit tight. He decided to keep them anyway and set them on his dresser, where he could put them on whenever he wanted.

Shortly after Allen died, I took a trip to visit MrsB and R.Cane in Texas. It was a many faceted celebration of 100 years birthday and an early celebration of my 70th birthday and every form of celebration we could cram into my visit. A friend took care of the cats.

When I returned, the house was as I left it. The task of converting what was 2 and now is 1, isn't easy or quick. Much remains untouched and even more remains TBD on the ToDo List. There isn't any more HoneyDo, it's all Mine ToDo or Not. Often times it's Not.

Some weeks after my return, I was upstairs working on my computer, when Lucky appeared. He flopped down on the floor as usual, but when I turned to look at him, he had brought me a present.

He brought me one of Allen's Bed Socks.

I melted.

Over the next weeks, he brought them one by one upstairs. 4 fluffy bed socks.

Lucky seemed happy when surrounded by the socks. He would grab one and grapple with it or lay his paw across it with a "THIS is mine" look, accompanied by "I am sharing with you" purr.

During the last few months, my own health has been uncertain. The MDs are working to sort out what's wrong, and I've been going for various tests, the results of which are: More Tests Needed.

One of my very good friends sent me a new laptop as a birthday gift. It is an extraordinary gift. I have it sitting on my dining table downstairs and since it's arrival, and my uncertain health, I've gone upstairs less and less. I still do climb the stairs but there are fewer reasons to do so at the moment. Come Winter temperatures, upstairs will be the place to be, but for now, downstairs is the coolest. Also closest to the kitchen and ice tea pitcher.

There are days, waiting for test results, scheduling for the next set, trying to stay cool when it's 115F outside, drinking enough fluids to stay hydrated, that laying down with the fan blowing on me is the biggest activity of the day. As they say, only mad dogs and Englishmen, haven't got the sense of a goose, to stay inside where it's cool and wait for the heat to drop to 105F in the evening.

Waking from a dozing nap, I saw Lucky laying at the foot of the bed. He has a Sphinx like profile and as he turned to look at me, he moved his paw just a bit, and I saw it.

A fluffy bed sock.

A day or so ago, after rustling up yet another appointment for yet another test which was complicated by the fact that no one called to book the appointment because, somehow that information was left in the bit bucket of the Great Medical Computer Patient Records, Tests and Appointment System, I was feeling a bit whelmed.

Sitting there, contemplating the logistics of getting to and from, which for this particular test is not too difficult, I felt Othello come by and nudge me, which is one of his "Is it Supper Time?' signals. I reached down to pet him and there was Bette not too far away, laying on her side, observing me. Then I heard a small mew, so I turned around in my chair and there was Lucky. He was coming towards me and the reason for the small mew was, he had something in his mouth. Something he brought to share with me.

A fluffy bed sock.

Sad to report the passing of Allen R - aka El Gato

It is with great sadness that I report the passing last week of  Allen R ... A great friend and contributor to this blog (aka El Gato)  ... and also my dear brother in law, and long time spouse of dear dear sister Kim.

Allen passed after a brief illness, with complications from un-diagnosed conditions -  even after repeated trips to the ER -  Allen was just able to be home for his 98th birthday ... but sadly passed only a few days later.

Our hearts are broken and our deepest condolences go out to Kim in this time of loss and sadness.

The Recipe Box: Nonsense Popcorn

Nonsense Popcorn
From the recipe box of KimB

Everyone likes a story.

We tell them all the time, and there are many types of stories. Some we make up and others we embellish. Sometimes we play the hero and other times we play the victim. Some stories are funny and others are sad. We tell them about all sorts of topics. Some topics are interesting to us, but not so interesting to others. Many stories are important as they mark significant days in our lives. Birthdays are happy days and Deaths are sad ones.

There are stories about events or universal experiences. Some events that were important fade, like the memories of ancient wars, or even recent ones, as the people with the most direct memory pass from life or from public view. Events that were thought to be momentous turn out to be little remembered, while other events that were overlooked turn out to be pivotal events of the future. We tell them all as stories.

There are stories about every aspect of our lives and our outlook on life or how it changed or didn't. Some stories have kernels of "reality or truth" and others are just "made up from whole cloth".

Stories that are made up are much enjoyed because there isn't any restriction to the imagination. A modern known problem is the "image bearing" story, like movies, video, and drawn graphic works, where your imagination is robbed of your own interpretation and replaced with a synthetic version provided by the movie, video and graphic artist. Music has something similar with sound, generating lots of sound mimicry. Music scores contain mimicry marks intended to produce the same sounds over and over again. Written words direct your imagination to a particular discription but allow you to fill in or remake the description as you prefer.

One's own stories have a private environment and cast list and these can alter in infinite ways; "Did I tell you about..." and "Do you remember..." giving rise to new variations on existing stories. Stories presented as movies get a re-telling when we describe a movie or TV show we watched to others (with or without spoilers). Music has its own imagery and lots of words attempt to capture the effects of sound: fast beat, cressendo, ballad are attempts to tell the story of sounds.

Some stories are just nonsense and have their own attraction: Jabberwocky. These stories may contain a figment of reality but also play havoc with our personal sense of Up and Down.

Twas bryllyg, and ye slythy toves
Did gyre and gymble in ye wabe:
All mimsy were ye borogoves;
And ye mome raths outgrabe.

Lewis Carroll 1855

In reference to recipes, we have multitude of stories about them. Where, when and how we learned or first tasted a dish. Stories on how to make it using "authentic" methods, along with myriads of stories on how to avoid failed or burned results. Sometimes these stories and the steps given, have a basis in how the ingredients function together: if you make the yeast incorrectly the bread doesn't rise; a practical application of chemistry. Some steps are pure inventions and their explainations have no effect on the outcome of the dish; mind game puzzles in the kitchen.

My story on Nonsense Popcorn is Jabberwocky. It's pure nonsense with perhaps an smidge of reality but it's a fun story I tell myself as I make it.

The Story of Nonsense Popcorn

Pre-COVID the microwave in the kitchen died. I had intended to have it repaired or replaced but SARS-CoV-2 had other things in mind for the planet. So I had to learn or re-learn how to cook sans-microwave, you know, the Old Fashioned Way of putting a pan of water on the cooktop to heat it.

Recently, I took a chance and purchased a countertop microwave. There are number of risks involved besides the costs. The supply chain isn't very stable and I'd already had an experience with a SlowPotPressureCooker that had to be returned, so I wasn't sure it would actually arrive, or work, or for how long. It did, it does and time will tell.

It's now sitting on a counter and I have to relearn how to use it. It's a bit like the old saying about prunes: "Is Three Enough, Is Six Too Many" . Is 1 minute enough or 1 min 30 seconds too much? Which is 90 seconds if you go the fastest way around the key pad.

To celebrate the re-acquisition of this modern necessity, I bought the MOST IMPORTANT item you can have for a microwave: Popcorn Kernels and a Microwave Popcorn Maker. Several hundred dollars plus a $3 jar of kernels spent to make a dish of popcorn. I could have made the popcorn on the the stove top, but I forgot how to do that.

After checking all the latest and greatest gadgets for making popcorn I opted for a $10 borosilicate glass bowl, aka a pyrex style glass bowl, which looks something like a goldfish bowl encased a silicone plastic net with handle.

All keen to have a tasty dish of popcorn, I followed the directions (mostly), put it in the microwave, selected the popcorn option and BAM!
.. pop pop pop pop... sniff sniff... yikes! It burnt ..
Nothing like burnt popcorn to remind you of why you didn't make much of it before COVID. That and the residue hull bits that get stuck in your teeth.

So I set about re-learning about how to make popcorn. There's a lot of information on hows and whys and I picked out the suggestions I thought would work for me and that is how I created My Story of Popcorn: A Nonsense Story

Internet Research
  • Some information indicates the moisture content of the kernel determines if it pops.
  • Some information states the kernel hull is very hard (aka flint) and impervious to moisture.
  • Application of heat, duration and temperature levels, impact the popping.
    • Too cold = no pop
    • Too mild = under popped
    • Too hot = burns
Like Golidlocks, the temperature has to be Just Right.

I experimented and dinked and tried this and that, to get:
ALL the kernels to pop WITHOUT burning it.

So I put in the required amount kernels and add a tiny bit of water. I think the dryer kernels enjoy something to drink even though the hulls are "impervious to moisture".

I add a pat of butter with a dash of salt or flavor to the top lid on the theory that the results will taste better, which it does.

I also think the few drops of oil will help the kernels to pop better. The reality is most of the salt and oil stay in the glass bowl and only a small amount finds its way onto the popcorn. Popcorn is not a super absorber. It's a fun thought anyway.

Then I do a ritual pre-heat cooking. I give the kernels a jolt of microwaves to wake them up. It does produce some steam inside the bowl which I image helps the popping aspect. Fog in a Bowl.

Then I give the whole thing the Big Jolt and wait for
The Popcorn Oracle to Speak.
  • If I get a big flurry of popping and the bowl fills up fast I know there won't be many no-poppers on the bottom but I have to stop the cooking or it will burn. Cancel is Your Friend.

  • If the flurry is pathetic and fills less than half the bowl, I hit Cancel and remove the good stuff before it burns.

In revenge I put the no-poppers back in the microwave with another Big Jolt and challenge those unpopped kernels to see if they can resist THIS JOLT!

I might do this several times before capitulating that the unpopped ones in the bottom are not going to pop.

If The Popcorn Oracle gives a good prophecy I get 3 dishes of popcorn; if it's a poor one: 2 dishes.

The Popcorn Oracle. is always generous; you just have to watch for the burnt ones, or develop a taste for carbonized corn.

12 Days of Gratefulness Day 12 by MrsB, RCane, KimB

[Editor's Note]

During these many months of COVID19, it is sometimes difficult to remember that Good Things Still Happen.

We would like share some of our Good Things both the profound and the mundane, hoping some of them might bring joy to your own lives.

Wishing all a happy, fun and safe holiday season.

Day 12

Seeing the wild ducks as they come daily to eat the bird seed that falls on the ground under the bird feeder

Thankful for getting this far .. with so many helping hands ... and I have high hopes for 2022 cheers to all all around

Knitting.

A few months ago MrsB finally got me to agree to let her teach me to knit. It's never been a big item on my list of things to do but with so many hours of nothing to fill I agreed to give it a try. She sent me most of her knitting kit to get me started and even some very red yarn. We talked on the phone and I did look-ups on the internet to figure out what I was supposed to do. I am like all beginners and make a mess of my attempts but that's what being a beginner is about: the joy of imperfection. When we talk I can almost sound like I know what it is I'm doing and I can ask better questions now on how to do different techniques.

It's a lot like Latin. Everything has already been translated, so there's no worries you will miss much.

The main risk is that you don't understand the jargon and miss some pointers but asking the same questions over again there are moments of AH HA! when a LED turns on.

I finished my first project: a scarf. What else? I made a long red scarf and Allen dutifully wears it, even if it's not quite right. It's close to right. It's a beginner's scarf.

I am now on my second project: A full size afghan with 6 colors using Intarsia techniques. Does it sound like I know something?

I cherish the chats with Mom and I try to listen carefully to her instructions:
It's all intuitive!
Until the needles fall off...

Day 11

MrsB
The many friends during my 99 years

KimB
LOTRO - Lord of the Rings Online MMORPG video game.

I've been playing LOTRO since the beta more than a decade ago. The game has changed ownership several times but the story remains the same a JRR Tolkien wrote it. Of course there are many paths across Middle-Earth and that's part of the fun.

During the first part of the COVID19 shutdown they opened all their servers to everyone so they could play for free.

It was a fantastic gesture and gift.

Recently my brother and I have reached the zenith of the books: the Fall of Sauron. Standing with Aragorn as the last of the free peoples are overwhelmed by the hordes pouring out of the Black Gates of Mordor, and engulfing all that stands in the way of their evil master. The deaths of the Lords of Gondor and the Rangers of the North, some who fell at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and the rest in front of the Black Gates.

"No one Is coming" says Aragorn, "but we will stand until the end."

And so shall we stand against the darkness, despair, death and injustice as the ongoing effects of the pandemic play out in real life.

Life Friends.

Life friends are those people who support you mentally and emotionally, providing insight, comfort and warmth just by being there. Sometimes there are long periods of silence between interactions but they are always there for you when you have need. They cannot do much to change your life or circumstances but their support is invaluable.

Day 9

MrsB
Pleasure and Amusement from watching the interaction between our pet dog and pet cat that are very fond of each other.

KimB
The stores, people and friends who have stayed open and helped out people like us who still shelter in place. The online delivery drivers making the rounds with loaves of bread and milk have made it possible for us to stay safe until the pandemic fades and new vaccines and treatments become available. The big box stores and markets carried the biggest burdens but a small specialty store near us took my grocery list over the phone, provided us with fresh veggies, meats, breads, many specialty items and did trunk drops. Without them, things would have been much bleaker.

I first met them when they opened their small market. Hardly 2 aisles but packed top to bottom with wonderful items. They were gracious to explain what the packages were and importantly how to eat the contents. They had meats, fish, deli - fabulous salamis, milk, yogurt, cheese, breads and incredible chocolates. Before COVID19, when I started to regain my health, I got a bicycle. I would bike to their store and get a few items and carried them home in my back pack.

After the pandemic started, they graciously took my panicked orders over the phone and did a trunk drop. Now when I call in the grocery order, they remind me of things I may have forgotten.

There is a difference between on-line computer nagware-suggestions and humans. One doesn't care if you order or not. The other cares that you have something to eat and enough of it to carry you through until the next order.

Mom.

MrsB never ceases to amaze. Her creativity is unbounded. Her determination to build a better society and a better America for all has lead her life into some interesting corners of history. Her art reflects not only her own experience but is a mirror to the past, present and future. It is an unbroken line marking every aspect of the country and all of it's best parts.

It's a reminder of what we can be, if we chose to be.
